She has a PhD in Tourism, Leisure and Culture (with a specialisation in Tourism and Development) from the University of Coimbra and a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Évora. She has a PhD in Tourism from the University of Aveiro. Lecturer with the rank of Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (IPP) – School of Education and Social Sciences (ESECS) since 2000. She has served as Director of the Tourism degree program and Chair of the Scientific Area of History, Geography, and Heritage. She is currently President of the Pedagogical Council of ESECS, Coordinator of the Department of Social Sciences, Territory and Development, and Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Wine Tourism. She holds a degree in Tourism Management and Planning, a Master’s degree in Information Management, a Postgraduate Diploma in Geographic Information Systems in Tourism, and is a certified Specialist in Tourism (through Public Examinations). She has completed the coursework for a PhD in Tourism and is currently finalizing her doctoral thesis: “Co-creating rural tourism experiences – the case of TER in the Alto Alentejo”, at the University of Aveiro (UA).
She collaborates with three research centers evaluated by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT): VALORIZA/IPP, GOVCOPP/UA, and CITUR. She is the author of two books, co-editor of two ebooks, and has published numerous chapters and articles in national and international scientific journals, in addition to delivering presentations at national and international conferences.

Holds a PhD in Tourism, a Master’s degree in Innovation, Planning and Development Policies, and a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism Management and Planning, all from the University of Aveiro. She is an Adjunct Professor and Coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Tourism at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre / ESECS. She is an integrated member of the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (GOVCOPP) and a collaborator at the CITUR Algarve research center.She coordinated the Operational Tourism Plan for Campo Maior and led the Plataforma Alto Alentejo XXI project focused on tourism. She was part of the team for the Alentejo Regional Tourism Observatory project, funded by INALENTEJO – Alentejo Regional Operational Program, and the Operational Tourism Plan for Portalegre, funded by the Portalegre City Council.
Currently, she is involved in the international projects: “Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality Laboratory at the Fluminense Federal Institute – São João da Barra Campus: Development of Immersive and Virtual Educational Content and Virtual Professor (e-Prof)” at IFF; “Link Me Up – 1000 Ideas”, a system supporting the co-creation of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship, funded by COMPETE; and the Facilitator Training – Innovative Pedagogical Training Project, funded by POCH. She also participated in UNESCO's International Pilot Project on Thematic Indicators for Culture, promoted by UNESCO and the Elvas City Council.
She serves on the editorial boards of several national and international journals, and on the scientific committees of national and international conferences, having reviewed articles and book chapters.In recent years, her research has focused on the areas of planning, management and digital marketing of tourist destinations, tourism indicators and statistics, ICT applied to tourism, big data in tourism, and media in tourism.

Ana Balão
PhD in Sociology from the University of Évora. Invited adjunct lecturer at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre and a member of CICS.NOVA.UÉvora. She has been involved in research/study project teams, particularly those focused on reflection and analysis in low-density territories, including the team responsible for the Strategic Tourism Development Plan for the Municipality of Vila de Rei (2020/2022). She is part of the team developing the Definition and Operationalization of a Methodological Framework for the Collection and Analysis of Statistical Data | Historic Villages of Portugal Network.
She was part of the international project Link Me Up – 1000 Ideas – a system to support the co-creation of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship, funded by COMPETE, as well as the Facilitator Training – Innovative Pedagogical Training Project, funded by POCH, having served as a facilitator for the Off the Grid Moments Experience Tourism project (1st place in the regional phase, representing the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre in the national phase – Beja 2022).
She is the coordinator of the Avis Nautical Station.
Her research and publications focus on intermunicipal cooperation, strategic foresight, networks, local development, and nautical tourism. She has been accepted to undergo the qualification process for the Specialist Title in Tourism (Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre). She is currently pursuing a PhD in Tourism at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
Adjunct Professor at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém. Member of the Research Centre in Arts and Communication – Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion Cluster. She holds a PhD in Educational Sciences from the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Vigo. She has been awarded the Title of Specialist in Education and Non-Formal Intervention: Sociocultural Animation and Animator Training.She coordinates the area of Sociocultural Animation at IPSantarém. Between 2014 and 2020, she coordinated the Bachelor's degree in Environmental Education and Nature Tourism, the short-cycle degree (TeSP) in Sociocultural Animation Applied to Ecotourism, and the vocational training course (CET) in Sociocultural Animation Applied to Tourism at IPSantarém.
